rising in the compost

the egret’s flight legs
tucked in
to compress its center
of gravity

the orb-weaver’s
perfect web
bending the morning light
into beads of dew

not for long
an evening that begins
with the brilliance
of one star
long gone

the dance
of heat lightning
on the meadow’s
queen anne’s lace

not for long
the darkness
between the kindle
of a firefly’s
flare

not for long
the lost stories
of the wind
and wildflowers
in my heart

My Wings

Today,

It is with great pleasure
that I announce
my acceptance
of my wings.

With my wings
comes the committment
to treat myself
with the same kindness
and compassion
that I treat others.

That I forgive myself
for making mistakes
rather called faux pas
(so much sexier in French)
and to acknowledge
and treat
my faults and foibles
with all due respect
and patience.

I understand that
with this committment
comes lifetime membership
into Tinker Belldom
including an unlimited
sprinkling of
tinklepink dust
and firefly glitter
to share and savor.

I pledge to always
and forever
nurture and kindle
the lightness of being
that is me
lest I forget
in which case
I get to reread
this announcement
as often as I want.

It is with sacred trust
an open mind

Mosaics

Twas a great day for a woodsy hike along a stream in Jockey Hollow National Park. George Washington and his troops camped here that frigid winter of the crossing of the Delaware to reverse the tide in favor of our fledgling nation. On these days, remnants of that bygone era remain admist flora and fauna of a birthing spring. I had to look hard for the emerging shoots (red and green) of skunk cabbage. Water Striders were creating ripples on still water and delicate shoots of moss created mini-forests. It was in the mid-fifties for the third day in a row and I could feel the sap rising in the trees and me.

Due North

It’s the first evening of extra daylight and the cacophony of gaggles of Canadian Geese returning to their summer grounds north of here. It always delights and amazes me to see (and sometimes only hear), these migrating birds on the wing and always flying true north or south. Spring is in the air when the birds of many tribes return and fill the sky with their conversations and songs. Soon to follow – buds, bulbs and blossoms.
